2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, with a screenplay co-written with Arthur C. Clarke.
The film follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient supercomputer HAL 9000 after the discovery of an alien monolith. HAL’s malfunction and subsequent conflict with the crew remains one of cinema’s most iconic depictions of AI gone wrong.
HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is an artificial general intelligence that controls the spacecraft Discovery One. HAL’s famous line “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that” has become synonymous with AI refusing human commands.
